👏 Check out some simple ideas to get your kiddos involved in the kitchen!

🥣Kitchen prep is a great time to get Littles hands on and learning about food in a pressure free way! Taking away the pressure can lead to increased comfort handling the food.

🥣 This can also be a great way to teach your Little some independence and responsibility!

💡Bonus: the kitchen is full of great speech and language opportunities, too! Teach your Little new words AND focus on helping them learn to follow directions!

⚠️ At times, you need your space and time to do something without Little hands moving things or voices interrupting your thoughts. Some people find joy and comfort in cooking/baking, it’s okay to take that time for you, too 🧡

➡️➡️ Head to the link in our bio to join our email list to get access to a free monthly calendar of activities each month!

🧃🍝 Meet them where they’re at, encourage exploration of new foods, & avoid burn out!

🥣 If your growing eater enjoys a food, help them learn about more foods by offering up SMALL changes in presentation of a food they already like!

🥞 Small changes can help:
1️⃣ your child avoid food rigidity⠀
2️⃣ decrease potential for burnout of a favorite food
3️⃣ your Little explore new foods in a way that they feel comfortable

🍽 Small changes can add up:
➡️ maybe a new texture leads to another new food
➡️ switching from juice to smoothies may mean adding new fruits and veggies
➡️ a change in applesauce flavor presentation may help your Little not burn out on (and stop eating) their favorite snack

✅ Offer small changes to teach and make connections. You may just find a new favorite food!

⚠️ If your child is an extreme picky eater and only eats a handful of foods, please do not alter their main nutrition sources without consulting your feeding therapy team

Cereal ➡️ Berries

🍽 Start with a favorite food and work your way towards learning about a new food! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🍓🫐 Linking to learn involves presenting one food at a time to your Little while using your words to show how the foods are linked! Such as “we had red crunchy berries and now we have red squishy berries!” Spend a few minutes interacting with each food before moving on to the next! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
💡 Remember: linking to learn is for food exploration! Your Little may not quite be ready to eat all of these foods just yet! Celebrate the small steps like touching a new food, putting a new food on their noses, or even taking a small lick! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

⚠️ Use SMALL amounts of these items to decrease food waste. Use leftovers from a previous meal or try this at a snack time when you can serve the link items.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⏰ Keep it fun and try not to stay at the table too long! Take no more than 15-20 minutes total to present each food one at a time. Try this strategy during a snack time so as not to interrupt mealtimes. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️Want to know our favorite tips to help with a successful mealtime ? Here’s our breakdown with the WHY behind the list.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
1️⃣ Offer 1-2 preferred foods. This means foods that your child will consistently eat. Having preferred foods on a plate makes them more likely to engage in their meal and eat something presented to them. If you’re offering something new, they might not eat it. That’s okay because they have a preferred food! Bonus: preferred foods might make your Little more comfortable with the new food. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
2️⃣ Offer 3 different foods. The goal with this tip is to make sure your Little is being exposed to a variety of foods and textures. This does NOT mean you need a fruit, vegetable, and protein for EVERY meal. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
3️⃣ Offer utensils. It’s going to take time for your Little to learn how to use utensils, and they’re going to end up on the floor at some point, BUT they can’t learn to use them if they aren’t offered. Eating with their hands is absolutely okay, but by providing the opportunity to use utensils gives them extra practice.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
4️⃣ Offer a napkin. The way this is offered changes by age! For Little ones, keep a napkin or washcloth at the ready for if they’re looking like they need their space cleaned or their hands wiped. For older kids, they can hold their own napkin in their laps. This teaches children that they have a problem solving strategy if things are too messy for them to handle and continue to stay at the table/engaged with the foods. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
5️⃣ Give the cup at the end! Teach your Little to fill up on the foods they’re presented instead of filling up on liquids. Offer water throughout the day and the last few minutes of a meal⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
6️⃣ Make a routine! Work on a hand washing to promote clean hands and get your Little prepped for a mealtime! Clean-up routines teach functional skills/responsibilities! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

🌮 Little struggling with “mixed textures” or a variety of foods with different tastes/texture all in one meal?

🌮Try our simple “Deconstruct to Instruct” strategy by breaking down the meal into separate components

🌮 This gives your Little some time and space to learn about new toppings without potentially refusing a meal all together. Tip: set aside small amounts of toppings before mixing up your dish.

🌮 It’s also a great idea to serve a SMALL amount of the fully mixed meal to your Little. This could be on the side of their plate or in a small dish. For example, small piece of your taco torn off and set next to their foods. It creates an opportunity for your Little to learn and be exposed to the same meal as the rest of the family.

🌮 Wondering how to move closer to a fully mixed together meal?
-Keep offering small amounts all mixed together
-Gradually bring toppings closer together (instead of separate bowls, place on the same plate together)
-Try mixing 1-2 toppings together at a time (ex: cheese on top of meat), slowly add more if your Little tolerates it

🌮 Does your Little like mixed textured foods? (Spaghetti, casseroles, sandwiches, soups, etc.) let us know below!

🌮 Modify taco presentation for your Little’s age and skill

🙌 Hands up if you’re going through some picky eating in your household! ⠀
⠀
👂 We hear from parents ALL THE TIME; “he used to eat EVERYTHING when he was a baby.” This can be really frustrating for parents to watch their little baby go from eating avocados by the fistful to avoiding the sight of a green vegetable. We hear you 💚 The good news is: you’re not alone AND there are plenty of different ways to make food fun for your growing eater!⠀
⠀
🌟 A couple things to remember when your Little goes through a time of picky eating:⠀
✅ keep food fun⠀
✅ keep exposing your Littles to a variety of foods ⠀
✅ explore foods outside of the kitchen (grocery store, farmer’s markets, watch youtube videos of vegetables growing, etc.) ⠀
✅ use neutral language to describe foods (use words like crunchy, smooth, sweet, etc to label foods) ⠀
✅ consider bringing this up with your child’s pediatrician if you have concerns⠀
⠀

🧼 Skip the face cleaning in the high chair - give it a try near the sink instead!

🍽 How about cleaning up consistently during the meal? We actually don’t recommend it! We encourage a healthy dose of mess during mealtimes, which includes resisting the urge to consistently wipe baby food off their face or clean hummus out from between their fingers! This helps kids learn more about the foods they interact with and encourages them to engage in a highly sensory ridden experience! Try a bib or feeding smock if you’re wanting to keep the clothes clean! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
✅ We also HIGHLY recommend cleaning your toddler or Little up following a meal OUT of their chair. Why? Ever have a kid that really dislikes being washed up? We have! Instead of completing a potentially negative experience (face washing) in their feeding chair, we recommend heading on over to a sink area for older kids or cleaning your Littles right on your lap! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

❌ “They will never learn to eat their food if we let them play with it.” This is FALSE!! Did you know that we use our senses when learning to eat foods? ⠀
⠀
🧒 Little ones can engage and, yes, play with their foods using all of their senses to help them learn more about that food! When we encourage fun and play with foods, we are helping our Littles by:⠀
⠀
✅ Developing their tolerations of different sensory properties of foods⠀
✅ Teaching them more about the foods. The more we know about things, the more comfortable we typically feel ⠀
✅ Encouraging fun, positive interactions with foods instead of pressure filled situations ⠀
✅ Building up positive, learning experiences with new foods⠀
⠀
🤔 Now, does this mean we want Littles playing with their foods ALL of the time and constantly flying their veggie around like space rockets at the table?! Not necessarily! We focus on food play and exploration during a food learning time, or a snack time or with new foods that your Little isn’t quite ready to eat yet! We believe that larger meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner) should be times when your child is offered a preferred food along with new foods, and your typical mealtime structure.⠀
⠀

❌ “good eater” “bad eater”
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
✅ toss out the idea of calling our kids “good” or “bad” based on their mealtime performance
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
❤️ here’s the deal: mealtimes are just a part of the day. When all is said and done, mealtimes don’t define us.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
💚 when we start early with this labeling, we can open doors to negative relationships with food and meals. Do we teach Littles that they’re “good eaters” if they always clear their plate (even if they’re eating past fullness?) or are we teaching them they’re “bad eaters” if they don’t try every new food all the time (and then creating shame at the table)?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🤷‍♀️ Just like Littles may sometimes have “good days” and “bad days...a “bad” day does not mean a “bad child.” A “bad meal” doesn’t mean a “bad eater.” A lot of “bad meals” does not mean we should start using the word “bad” to regularly talk about their relationship with food.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⁉️ So, what do we focus on instead? How do we rephrase our wording? Try some of these:
➡️ Instead of “good eater” try...
✅ “you were adventurous trying that new food!”
✅ “he loves mealtimes!”
➡️ Instead of “bad eater” try...
✅ “I love how you sat with us at the table tonight”
✅ “she is learning to eat new foods”
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🤷‍♀️ What do you think?! Let us know below!

Fries ➡️ BBQ Chicken

🍽 Start with a favorite food and work your way towards learning about a new food! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🍟 Linking to learn involves presenting one food at a time to your Little while using your words to show how the foods are linked! Such as “we had fries with our sauce & now we have nuggets!” Spend a few minutes interacting with each food before moving on to the next!

🥦 sounds pretty basic, right? It is! It’s also so true! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🥦 we can’t expect our Littles to learn to like a variety of foods if we don’t serve them. This also goes for foods that we don’t serve because other people in the family don’t like/eat them. For example, if dad doesn’t like asparagus and it’s never served at mealtimes - we can’t expect our Littles to learn to like it either. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🥦 does this mean we need to buy unnecessary groceries or serve food to be wasted? Nope! If you want your Little to learn about a food offer SMALL portions (we’re talking one broccoli floret). If you want to introduce something that not everyone in the family eats, have it as a side at a restaurant or buy it within a mixed item (think frozen vegetable mix for our earlier asparagus example). ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
💚 that being said, it’s okay for our Littles to not like ALL foods. It’s okay to serve what we have access to and what the rest of the family will eat. NO momma shame tolerated here 💚⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

👏 It’s okay to let your Littles know something is not the menu for a meal. You, as the adult, can decide when and what to serve. However, you can also acknowledge what their food preferences are and work together to find a time to serve that item. Offering similar choices is a great way to stick with your boundary, acknowledge their preferences, and also encourage independence with their selection.

🙌 Side note: If your Little often requests an item that you might consider “unhealthy”, keep in mind that all foods can have a place. We also want to avoid saying things such as “if you’re good you get __” or “if you eat all of your broccoli you can have ___”. That way we can let our Littles know that foods don’t come with a value and don’t need to be earned. It’s not about labeling things as “junk” food or “healthy” food ➡️ it’s all food.

🧽 P.S. our kids are SPONGES and take in so much of what we say. If we start to talk about sugar, calories, calling things junk food, etc ➡️ they’re listening & learning. Model the words that you want your child to have as their inner dialogue

⁉️ Does your Little ask for things not on the menu?

🍏🍐 Meet them where they’re at, encourage exploration of new foods, & avoid burn out!

➡️ new canned fruits may lead to more fruits
➡️ a change in cracker flavor presentation may help your Little not burn out on (and stop eating) their favorite snack

✅ Offer small changes to teach and make connections. You may just find a new favorite food!

⚠️ If your child is an extreme picky eater and only eats a handful of foods, please do not alter their main nutrition sources without consulting your feeding therapy team

❓Did you know that many feeding therapists recommend the introduction of a straw cup and prefer straws over sippys?!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🥤Straw cup drinking is a great skill to teach your Little! Straw cups are good for development of oral motor skills including lip rounding and tongue movement. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🥤With straw cup training, you can begin by offering liquids (we may start with smoothie thick and gradually thin it out) via a straw positioned as a pipette, then gradually move on to a “primed” (pre-filled straw by you squeezing the cup) straw, and then move into independent suction from a straw. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🥤Sippy cups do not offer the same opportunity for oral motor development and can create patterns with forward tongue positioning that is not ideal for oral development or health. That being said, let’s not be shaming any sippy cup users out there! They are convenient and easy to teach Littles to drink from, but the more we know - the more we can grow! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
💡 Keep in mind, straw cups are a great skill to start around 9 months, but you may begin straw cup drinking earlier if your child is showing interest and readiness! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

🧐 Looking for small swaps to help your learning eater try new things? Check out these simple ideas!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
👏 This is a great way to show our Littles that we see their food/taste preferences AND that there are other foods out there they can experience that are similar! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
✅ Always let your Little know that something new is coming. Tell them about what it is and describe it to help them prepare for a new food experience! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⚠️ Caution: this is in NO way to shame certain foods or brand certain foods as “bad”, but rather a way to encourage exposure to a wider variety of foods. By offering a variety and providing changes, we can help our Littles experience many types of food. Remember, “food is food.” That being said, when offering these changes, we want to make sure to stay away from comments such as “eat this because it’s healthier than ___” or this food is “good for you and that other food is bad.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🙋‍♀️ Hands up if you’re going to give any of these swaps a try! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

🍽 Help your Little get involved with mealtimes in a functional way!

✅ Help your Little develop independent skills. Encourage them to complete this activity on their own to develop a sense of confidence in their skills to complete everyday tasks
✅ Setting the table is an easy way to get your Little involved with mealtimes without putting extra pressure on them with foods
✅ Involving the whole family in the process can make it fun! You can shower your Little with some praise based on their ability to help and participate (instead of focusing on praise provided on what/how much is eaten)

💧Wanting to switch up your little’s drink to add more water, but are worried because you have a picky eater?! A picky eater that can likely find the smallest piece of mushroom in their spaghetti? A picky eater that likely struggles with change?! Try a GRADUAL reduction: ⠀
⠀
🥛 We did a slow reduction by going from milk to water
1️⃣ 100% milk, 0% water⠀
2️⃣ 75% milk, 25% water⠀
3️⃣ 50% milk, 50% water⠀
4️⃣ 25% milk, 75% water⠀
5️⃣ 0% milk, 100% water ⠀
⠀
💡 This may differ depending on each Little. Some Littles may be able to reduce faster, others may take longer with smaller change increments and that’s okay! ⠀
💡 Try this step at a single meal or snack time, instead of at every drink presentation throughout the day. For example, pick an afternoon snack that your little typically has milk with and try this gradual change across a few days at that same snack time to assist with predictability during a period of change ⠀
💡 It’s ok to offer a different cup! Changing it up encourages your Little to be more comfortable with variety! Changing a cup can seem like a little step, but helps teach acceptance of change! ⠀
⠀
⛔️ Any time you make changes for EXTREME picky eaters, consider their main food/nutrition sources. If your child is eating only a few foods at this time and mainly relies on their drinks as their main nutrition source, please consult your feeding therapist prior to making dramatic changes. ❤️⠀

🥳 You can use this gradual reduction strategy with other liquids as well
⠀
🙋‍♀️ Anyone tackling this change in your household? ⠀

💧 Looking for tips on how to teach your little to drink from an open cup? One of our favorite strategies to use is introducing liquids via small, open cups (child sized products, bottle caps, or even a clean medicine cup!). They are just the right size for your little! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
💡 You can start teaching this skill as early as six months! That recommendation is based on if your child has shown readiness, interest in cups, and is currently medically stable. If that doesn’t apply to your little at this time, that’s ok, we will get there! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
✅ We actually recommend teaching open cup drinking as their first official cup experience. It offers a lot of benefits including development of oral motor skills! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🥛 When we first introduce liquids from an open cup, we choose to present them as more of a smoothie mixture. This slows the liquid down so your little isn’t getting too much all at once! After all, when you’re first starting off they are still learning about how to handle all of that liquid. We might mix a small amount of water with a preferred purée to achieve that smoothie texture. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🥛 When you are teaching your little one to drink from an open cup, make sure to model it yourself! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🥛 When presenting the cup, we tend to help a little at first by giving extra support.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🥛 As they continue to progress, you can gradually decrease the thickness of the liquid and the amount of support you’re giving. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
❓Hands up if you’re working on open cup drinking in your household?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Please introduce cups at your own discretion. If you have any questions about your child’s readiness, please feel free to message us! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
